What is a Deductible?
Deductible
The amount (generally a dollar amount) you are required to pay before the insurer will pay for the balance of your medical expenses. Deductible amounts are found in the ‘summary of benefits’ section.
Example: If your plan has a $500 deductible requirement and your medical expense is $8000, you pay $500 and the insurer pays the rest.
GOOD TO KNOW
Some plans do not have deductible requirements while others offer a range of deductible amounts. If you choose a zero or low deductible amount, your premium will be more expensive. If you choose to pay a higher deductible, the cost of your plan will decrease.
ASK BEFORE YOU BUY
Will I have full access to my financial accounts at my destination?
If you choose a plan with a higher deductible, make sure that you can access funds immediately to pay for your portion of the medical expenses in case of an emergency.
