What is Subrogation?

Subrogation
The right of your insurer to take over your legal right to recover costs due to an injury or medical event you sustained by a third party.
Example: You were injured in a car accident in Spain and needed knee surgery that cost $15,000. You were not at fault. Your claim for medical care was approved and the insurer can now take the steps to recover that cost from the third party that was at fault.
GOOD TO KNOW
If there is a subrogation clause in your policy and the insurer decides to pursue the third party, you will have to sign legal documentation allowing the insurer to take over your rights and you must cooperate with the insurer.
ASK BEFORE YOU BUY
What can I expect in terms of my time and are there any costs to me if the subrogation clause is used?
